What will you be doing?

As the energy consumption is still rising the transition to more renewable energy is becoming increasingly important. PV is a promising renewable energy generation.

To answer to the demand of renewable energy PV also needs to be implemented in more innovative ways, using surfaces not competing with agricultural areas and already available surfaces on buildings. State of the art flexible modules are still too expensive for large scale application. Due to their standard size and electrical architecture they don’t allow adaptation to specific applications.

The Integration Team of Solliance works on the development of flexible PV foils that can be used in mass-production and in any application. The final goal is to have freedom in size, shape, electrical output and lifetime for competitive costs. An important challenge for this goal is to find the suitable materials and processing of the solar cell material that allow sufficient protection, low cost and flexibility.

By testing the effect of using different materials, architectures and processes on the lifetime of a flexible solar cell, we try to reach optimal configurations. During this internship project you will study the influence of processing parameters and encapsulant choice on the final properties of the encapsulant material. For this purpose you will make prototypes using both material coupons and functional devices, and analyze their optical and mechanical properties and electrical performance after processing and different accelerated lifetime tests. This knowledge is required for the ongoing optimization towards a flexible PV foil that can be used for integration of PV foil in mass-produced products.

What do we require from you?

Independent working attitude, with hands on approach. Good communication skills to discuss/present results to colleagues and find explanations for the observed effects. Initiative to set out own further experiments and decent planning.

Much of the work will take place in the lab, but of course you will also need to take time in the office to process and analyze measurement results, and discuss them with your colleagues. You work in a team of about 20 people, of which about 5 are interns with topics in the same group.
